How To prepare for your Newborn session

A newborn photo session is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to capture the early days of your baby's life, so a little preparation can make a big difference in how smoothly everything goes. Here's a well-structured blog to help expecting parents get ready for this special experience. I service Gladstone in Central Queensland.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photo Session

Welcoming a newborn into your life is one of the most magical moments you'll ever experience. Capturing those first precious days through a professional photo session ensures you have timeless memories to cherish forever. But how do you prepare to make the most of it? Here's everything you need to know before stepping in front of the camera.

1. Schedule Your Session Early

Newborn photos are best taken within the first two weeks after birth, when babies are still sleepy and curl up naturally into adorable poses. Reach out to me  well in advance—preferably during your pregnancy—to secure a date that works for you.

2. Timing Matters

I  recommend scheduling the session during the morning when babies tend to be more settled. Ensure your little one is well-fed and warm to maximize comfort during the shoot. There will also be allocated time in your session for feeds.

3. Keep the Environment Cozy

A warm room helps keep your baby relaxed throughout the session. My studio will be warm so baby is comfortable so keep that in mind when choosing your own outfits. Baby is best to arrive in a zip up onesie so I can remove that and wrap straight up, a white singlet underneath is perfect as I can leave that under the wraps.

4. Choose Simple Outfits

Less is more when it comes to newborn photography. Avoid busy patterns, stiff fabrics, or oversized outfits. I  prefer natural, minimal clothing—or even none at all—to highlight delicate features. Keep neutral-toned onesies or swaddles on hand. I have a large variety of blankets wraps and outfits in studio, so you can leave all the styling up to me if you wish.

5. Prep Yourself Too

Parents are often included in newborn portraits, so wear soft, neutral-colored clothing that complements the gentle tone of the session. Avoid bold prints or bright colors that may distract from the baby. I love white outfits as well as it offers a clean modern timeless look when used in my white set that includes a bed for natural family posing.

6. Bring Meaningful Props

Do you have a special knitted blanket from Grandma or a toy that holds sentimental value? Incorporating personal items makes photos more meaningful. However, keep it minimal to maintain a clean, timeless look.

7. Relax and Go With the Flow

Babies are unpredictable. Sometimes they sleep soundly, while other times they need extra cuddles. Be patient and trust that I will get the perfect gallery for you. as a professional with years of experience I  know how to work around a newborn’s schedule and will capture beautiful moments no matter what.

8. Capture the Details

Tiny fingers, wrinkled feet, and button noses—these delicate features change quickly. I will also allow time to take macro portraits of your little one with my 100mm macro lens and  focus on close-up shots that highlight the smallest details. These are so precious to look back on in years to come as these little details can be forgotten in time.

With a little preparation and trust in me as your  photographer, your newborn session can be a stress-free and heartwarming experience. Every yawn, stretch, and sleepy smile captured will be a cherished memory for years to come.

9. Pack Extra Essentials

Newborn photo sessions can sometimes run longer than expected, and all the excitement might make your baby a bit hungrier than usual. If you’re bottle-feeding, bring extra formula to ensure you can meet your baby’s feeding needs. Likewise, having extra nappies on hand is a must, as more frequent changes may be needed during the session. Also pack extra clothes for yourself incase baby has an accident on you while doing any naked posing with them.

If your little one uses a dummy, make sure to bring it along—it can be a lifesaver for soothing them between poses and helping maintain a calm, relaxed atmosphere.

10. Enjoy a Comfortable Studio Experience

My studio is designed to provide a relaxed, welcoming environment for both parents and newborns. Located on the bottom level of our home in South Gladstone, it offers a spacious and thoughtfully curated space for your session.

The newborn room features an ensuite and a cozy couch, allowing you to sit back and unwind while your little one is photographed. Just beyond the door is the main studio—a generously sized area with high ceilings and pristine white walls and ceilings, perfect for capturing timeless images.

For added convenience, a separate room houses an extensive collection of props, a client wardrobe, and costumes to help personalize your session. And if you need a moment to refresh, there’s a conveniently located kitchen to make your experience even more comfortable.
